Varitek and Wakefield in the Red Sox HOF

It was bound to happen once they both retired in the spring of 2012 and on May 19th, at the gala, and May 20th, for the fans, that is when it is going down. Tim Wakefield, #49, and Jason Varitek, #33, will be inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame. Wakefield and Varitek belong in the same sentence like peanut butter and jelly. They will forever be linked together as one of the greatest pitchers and catchers in Red Sox history.

Varitek spent over 15 years in a Red Sox uniform and caught a record 4 no-hitters while in Boston. He was a leader on and off the team and had the honor of being named Red Sox captain in 2005. He is only the third captain in Red Sox history following the great names of Yastrzemski and Rice. He also caught over 1,400 games which is astounding to think of. He is a two time champion and crucial member of both the 2004 and 2007 world series teams. He also is known for one of the greatest baseball fights in Red Sox history. Tek v A-Roid (Yes, I know it's actually A-Rod). It was an iconic match that will forever be cemented in glory. Thank you Seattle for the trade that sent Tek over to us, we will never forget that moment.

Tim Wakefield spent over 17 years in a Red Sox uniform and is one of the most decorated knuckleballers in my opinion. He won over 200 games total and 186 for the Red Sox. He has over 3,000 innings pitched and 430 starts, which are both Red Sox franchise records. He was also a very important piece to the 2004 and 2007 world series champion teams. He saved our bullpen a lot in the two world series. His knuckleball will always be remembered and Red   Sox fans hope they will never have to see him pitch to Varitek ever again, like he did in the 2004 ALCS. Luckily, the rest of the playoffs went well for the Red Sox. Thank you Pittsburgh for releasing Wake so he could sign with us.

As you can see both of these guys are well deserved to be inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame. Their numbers 49 and 33 are both   not retired but no one since them has worn those numbers so maybe on May 20th in front of the fans, they will retire both of their numbers. Johnny Pesky is the only Red Sox that is not in the Baseball HOF to have his number retired. Normally, you have to be inducted in the Hall to be considered for the number retirement, but maybe they'll do it once again for the great Tek and Wake. Congrats to both on their careers and enjoy the induction!
